It was a great pleasure to moderate the panel discussion entitled “Shaping the Future of Smart Manufacturing: Integration, Intelligence and Innovation”

We are living in a time when manufacturing is changing faster than ever before. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Industrial Internet of Things, robotics, advanced analytics and automation are no longer just concepts of the future. They are already transforming the way we design, manufacture, manage processes and make business decisions. However, smart manufacturing is not simply about introducing new technologies. The real question is how to connect these technologies into a functional, flexible and sustainable system that delivers real value. This brings us to the three key words of today’s discussion: integration, intelligence and innovation. Integration means connecting people, machines, data and business processes into a unified whole. Intelligence means the ability to turn vast amounts of data into insights that enable us to predict, optimize and make better decisions. And innovation represents the willingness to challenge the way we work today and create new solutions that will make our manufacturing more competitive, resilient and sustainable. Yet, as we talk about technology, we must not forget what matters most, people. The future of smart manufacturing will not be shaped by algorithms and robots alone, but by people who understand technology, who are willing to learn and adapt, and who are capable of creating new value together with technology. Because the future of smart manufacturing is not something that will simply happen. We are shaping the future of manufacturing today through the decisions we make, the technologies we choose, and the way we connect people, knowledge and innovation. Author: Amra Bratovčić

COST Action CA23123: “Non-chemical Weed Management in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs)”

The 1st in-person Core Group Meeting of COST Action CA23123 took place on 2–3 October 2025 at the Research Institute for Organic Farming (FiBL) in Frick, Switzerland.

During the two-day meeting, the team:

• Reviewed progress from the first project year
• Planned activities and outputs for year two
• Discussed publications, communication strategies, and collaboration with COST Action CA22109 “MedPlants4Vet”
• Visited an organic herb producer and the Ricola Showgarden

The event provided an excellent opportunity for networking and knowledge exchange on sustainable, non-chemical weed management in medicinal and aromatic plants.
